Heleen is a seasoned lawyer with extensive expertise in privacy and data protection law, cybersecurity, technology, AI, and commercial contract law. As counsel at Lexence, she advises clients on complex contracts, compliance, and digital regulations, with a particular focus on technology, IT, and AI-related matters.
Her work includes drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and terminating commercial agreements such as collaboration agreements, procurement contracts, general terms and conditions, and agency and distribution agreements.
Heleen provides strategic guidance on GDPR compliance, international data transfers, and the responsible use of AI. She regularly conducts Data Protection Impact Assessments and helps companies implement privacy policies that meet regulatory standards. Organisations rely on her for rapid, effective support during data breaches and other (cyber)security incidents, including risk management. She also assists in developing comprehensive privacy frameworks and related documentation.
In addition, Heleen advises on AI governance and compliance with the EU AI Act, helping businesses navigate emerging regulatory frameworks for trustworthy AI. She frequently publishes articles and insights on AI regulation, governance, and the intersection of technology and law.
Heleen has been with Lexence since 2011 and was admitted to the Dutch Bar in 2008. She holds a master’s degree in law from Leiden University and completed postgraduate studies in National and International Contracting at Grotius Academy (cum laude). She also studied Art History at Leiden University, attended the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris, and spent time at the University of Redlands in California. Her international experience includes an internship at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Since 2025, Heleen has served on the board of the DFA, the Dutch association for specialists in distribution, franchise, and agency agreements. She also holds the CIPP/E privacy certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
